Gemini Gems go read-only on 17 November, replaced by Skills
Google is retiring Gems, Gemini's custom assistants. They turn read-only on 17 November and disappear on 17 December; Google converts existing Gems into Skills automatically.
What it means for you
If you rely on a Gem, it will become a Skill you call inside your chats; check it still works the way you want.
What to do
Open Customize > Skills before 17 November and check your converted Gems. If a Gem uses big files, keep copies of them.
The details
Skills work inside any chat: type @ and pick one, or Gemini uses it by itself when your request fits. They're free in regular chats and found under Customize > Skills. Skills have a 100 MB file limit, and the largest files of a bigger Gem are dropped first. Sharing skills and adding Google Drive files are still a few weeks away; Workspace and school accounts reportedly have until 2027.
