YouTube TV support scam: fake phone number on Google cost a viewer thousands
A YouTube TV viewer in North Carolina lost several thousand dollars after calling a fake support number found on Google, the McDowell County Sheriff's Office says. The caller was told to buy Lowe's gift cards.
What it means for you
If you search for a company's support number, the first result may be a scammer, not the company.
What to do
Contact support only through the official YouTube TV app or website. Anyone who asks you to pay with gift cards or share their numbers or PINs is a scammer. Never give passwords, codes or bank details to a caller you haven't verified.
The details
It started with a message while watching YouTube TV saying the debit card details needed updating; it's unclear whether that message was real. The person searched Google for a support number and called the first one, which reached a scammer.
